Luke is progressing along but antsy to go out in the pasture. Dr. Duval said Luke should be on stall rest for a minimum of 20 days, and that 30 days would be better.

Luke can be a high energy boy and today he was feeling his oats. He really wanted to go out and reared up at one of the volunteers, all in a playful manner. He was giving out 'love bites', trying to get us to play but we can't do that because we don't want Luke jumping on the bad leg and re injuring it or worse, causing more damage.

Poor Luke just hates being inside, especially when all his buddies are out in the nice cool weather. At least his stall has a large window that can be opened in the daytime. He can see several 'playmates' from it, he just can't join them right now !

Luke's Sesmoid bone and Suspensory Injury ....

About a week ago we started noticing Luke limping slightly so Cheryl put him on stall rest and called the Vet. Cheryl believed Luke reared up, and when he came down he caused some kind of injury. Dr. Duval came out to do the initial assessment. She wanted to set up another time to take X-rays and determine if he had a suspensory or sesmoid injury. In the meantime he had his front legs wrapped to help with the swelling and has pretty much stayed in his stall.

Today Dr. Duval returned and did the x-rays, and it was determined that Luke has a sesmoid bone fracture with a probable suspensory injury. When the suspensory ligament is injured, it swells. It's located in an area where there is lots of bone and hard fibrous tissue, so there isn't much room for it to expand. As a result, the enlarged ligament can press against the deep branch of the lateral plantar nerve causing permanent damage.

Dr. Duval suggested as little pasture time as possible to give Luke's injury a good chance to heal.

I'll keep you posted, but for now know that Luke is OK and on stall rest. He's not particularly fond of being inside all day when all his buddies are out, but we give him lot's of treats and snacks !
